My girls love skiing…so packing the car and doing a road trip from Sydney to Falls Creek, located in the picturesque North East of Victoria, with just Dad is a great way to bond with two excited ski bunnies, writes Phil Osborn.
The drive from Sydney to Falls Creek is an easy drive, allow a day to travel in comfort. We hit the road early, with the goal of getting to Falls Creek in daylight. We loved the drive the most once we had turned off the highway and started snaking our way up into the beautiful mountain roads. Depending on where you live, here are some transport times, directions and options to consider – click here for more info.
Quick Tips for arriving at Falls Creek:
For people only used to skiing in NSW, arriving in Falls Creek has a different entry process. Firstly, book your Resort Entry Fee here. The next step is to book your Accommodation Transfer Service (ATS) here. For parents with kids, it’s helpful to have all your shopping and gear in easy to carry bags to help make the transition from your car to the ATS as easy as possible. You drop off all your bags at the ATS area, then go and park your car and catch a shuttle back to the ATS area.
My girls loved getting in the snow cat to arrive at our ski-in, ski-out accommodation – Snow Ski Apartments. Our accommodation was located in the Village Bowl, next to the Gully chairlift with Eagle and Summit close by.
We found the team at the Falls Creek Reservations Centre also really helpful with planning our trip. You can call them on 1800 45 35 25. The more you are organised before you go, the easier it is when you arrive.
Falls Creek Village
Falls Creek really offers a true alpine experience being located in the snow. Again, for people from NSW, this is such a cool experience, to have to move around the village in a snow cat. Falls Creek Village is loaded with great dining options aimed at all budgets. Our favourite dining experience, aside from my cooking of course, was at the Astra Falls Creek. Treat yourself if you are heading to Falls Creek, it may well be the best alpine dining experience in Australia!
Ski School
My girls loved their time in the Falls Creek Ski School. We took advantage of the Spring Skiing deal that was on offer in September, so prices depend on when you are visiting the resort in peak or shoulder season. Click here for all info on the junior ski school.
Skiing with Steve Lee
A must do experience unique to Falls Creek, is to go out with 3 times Olympian skier, Steve Lee. Steve grew up in Falls Creek and knows every inch of the both the backcountry and the resort like the back of his hand. You are in safe company with Steve, so as long as you a good intermediate skier or snowboarder, you’ll have the time of your life on his tour. Book your tour here.
